GSOC Racer Blog

By David Lippucci—Race Director

Mother Nature had a hard, cold weekend game plan at Sugar January 6-7, 2018. Saturday greeted races with -8 F air and -15 wind chill…luckily it was a sunny day that made it only feel like zero degrees. The GSOC race team remains in first place after our second race of the 2017-2018 season. We only had one no show with challenging conditions that helped our team gain a strong showing with 41 athletes.

Saturday’s 9:00 start for slalom was brutally cold. Division 2 on Oma’s Meadow had to deal with more wind than Division 1 which ran on Sugar Slalom with a technical course set. Shaved grippy ice ruts formed after 50 racers rather than 5 racers which was nice.

Sundays Division 1 GS set was at the same start area as the slalom. Another blue bird day with 200 mile visibility and 18 degree temps and no wind offered perfect conditions for racing.

Both divisions had fun sets even though the Division one course’s finish area was so short, many racers fell into the netting.

Congratulations to the following GSOC racers who finished first, second or third at the Sugar race January 6-7, 2018:

Jake Laroe—First, flight 1 Slalom and GS

Will Spradling—First, flight 2 Slalom

David Lippucci—Third, flight 2 slalom
